It may be better to go to the second level causes first, however, using roles as the psychic measure of the effect of a given tangible? cause on a given person (group) who plays that role.

Social science has grown enormously in extent, in coverage of situations, over the last generation, but not in depth. Theory is scarcely better. A dexterity with analogies can permit one to lasso all the wide-reaching studies and applications. But little of value has happened in the formulation of new or reformulation of old laws and concepts. A thousand studies of prejudice, e. g., give us no better theories of prejudice.
